Northwest Coast Seal Dish Ca 1900
Ex Rasmussen Collection.
A delicately crafted piece inlaid with dog teeth, shells, and tiny Russian trade beads.
Axel Rasmussen was a Presbyterian minister and school teacher who moved to Wrangell, Alaska in the late 1920’s. As a result, he spent a lot of time collecting works of art by First Nations artists during this time.
In 1948, the Portland Art Museum acquired half of the Rasmussen’s collection. A California private collector purchased the other half.
